Kyiv mayor says may run in next mayoral elections

KYIV. Feb 4 (Interfax) - Kyiv mayor Volodymyr Makeyenko said he will probably run for mayor in the next election.

"Amid the protest actions in Kyiv, the president appointed me to take up this post in order to prevent lawlessness and provocations, and to negotiate everything with all," Makeyenko said at a press briefing on the sidelines of a session of the Kyiv legislature.

"Fate has placed me where I am now. I know that I must make decisions right now, today. What will happen tomorrow, I do not know," he said.

He said he is an advocate of "stability, logic and commonsense," adding that he has been living in Kyiv for 27 years.

"All know me: members of the artistic community, sportsmen, businessmen, bankers and politicians. So, we shall wait and see," he said when asked whether he will run for mayor.

Makeyenko said that he had given up the salary due to Kyiv's mayor, "even a salary of 1 million hryvni." He made this statement, when reminded that his predecessor, Leonid Chernovetskiy, assigned a symbolic salary of 1 hryvnia for himself.
