Moscow expects ISAF's report on mission completion at UN Security Council - diplomat

MOSCOW. Feb 6 (Interfax) - Moscow feels entitled to expect that the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan will present a report at the UN Security Council on the outcomes of its mission and believes that this will be done, Russian Ambassador to Kabul Andrei Avetisian said.

"We expect and feel entitled to expect a report at the UN Security Council from ISAF, which has a mandate from the UN Security Council to conduct an operation in Afghanistan," Avetisian said in an interview with Interfax.

"If ISAF and NATO believe this mandate has been fulfilled, it would be quite natural, in our view, to report about this to the Security Council. And I believe this will be done in some format," he said.

Asked whether his words that Moscow is entitled to expect a report from ISAF at the UN Security Council mean that Moscow has tangible reasons for such expectations and that there have been some signals to this effect, Avetisian replied, "This goes without saying for me. If a coalition led by NATO has received a mandate to carry out some operation, it is supposed to give an account upon its completion. You are absolutely right that this is Russia's principled position and we continue to adhere to it."
