Putin hopes as commissioner Pamfilova to assess critically actions of authorities
NOVO-OGARYOVO. Feb 13 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said he hoped that as human rights commissioner Ella Pamfilova would cooperate with the authorities and assess critically their activities at all levels.
During a meeting on Thursday with human rights commissioner Vladimir Lukin, who is leaving the position, and candidate to replace him Ella Pamfilova Putin asked her whether she was ready to take the position of the human rights commissioner.
Pamfilova said in response she thanked human rights organizations, which nominated her, and the president for support. "Of course, I agree and I hope very much that if this appointment happens, I will work with the help of all those interested in resolving these issues," she said.
The commissioner's work is quite peculiar, Putin said. "Constant attention and cooperation with the authorities and not just cooperation but a critical view at what the authorities of all levels do, but without this work society can not develop harmonically and interests of our citizens can not be complied with fully, as much as it is possible," the president said.
Despite some clashes in the activities of the commissioner and the authorities, human rights organizations and the authorities have the same goal - citizens' benefit, Putin said. The president said that due to this he supported the cooperation between the commissioner and the authorities' representatives.
Pamfilova said she hoped she would be able to find support within the authorities, law enforcement authorities and human rights community.
"An honest law enforcement officer is the best friend of an honest human rights activist," Pamfilova said.
Pamfilova has all necessary qualities and experience and good reputation to be appointed for this position, Lukin said. "I have no doubts that Ella Aleksandrovna will pick up the torch smoothly and will carry it further," Lukin said.
