Poland wages deliberate campaign to discredit Russia's WWII victory - ambassador
KALININGRAD. Feb 18 (Interfax) - Certain Polish circles have launched an anti-Russia campaign aimed at diminishing its role in World War II, Russian Ambassador to Poland Alexander Alexeyev said.
"Today there is a massive, active, nationally heated campaign in Poland to discredit Russia's role in the victory over fascism. The situation around monuments is part of it. All means are being used in this campaign - work with historians, journalists, the public," the ambassador said at a mourning ceremony in the Polish town of Pieniezno (Warmia-Masuria province, formerly Germany's Mehlsack) to mark the Soviet General Ivan Chernyakhovsky's death anniversary.
The decision by the Pieniezno authorities to dismantle the monument to a hero who liberated Poland from fascists is not an isolated case, the Russian diplomat said. Currently, the Russian Embassy is defending at least four monuments to Soviet soldiers who fell while liberating the Poles.
