Klitschko says Yanukovych has wrong idea about Kyiv events

KYIV. Feb 19 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has a wrong idea about the Kyiv situation, UDAR leader Vitali Klitschko said.

"Yanukovych exhibits an absolutely inadequate reaction to the situation. All he has said is that the opposition leaders must call on people on Maidan to stop the confrontation and to lay down arms," the party website quoted Klitschko as saying early on Wednesday morning.

Klitschko said he could not understand what weapons the president was talking about. The UDAR leader insisted that the fire was coming from the police lines.

The statement was posted after Klitschko's meeting with the president.

"I also think that the authorities should immediately pull out the police and stop the armed confrontation, which is killing people. I said so to Yanukovych. What negotiations can we speak about when blood is being spilled? But, unfortunately, he does not understand the situation," Klitschko said.

After his meeting with the president, the UDAR leader went to Independence Square, a site of ongoing confrontations between radicalized protesters and law enforcers.
