Black Sea Fleet to commission its first new sub in 2015 - commander

MOSCOW. Feb 20 (Interfax-AVN) - The construction of six diesel-electric submarines of Project 636.3 for the Russian Black Sea Fleet is on schedule, Russian Navy Commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov said in comment on the laying of the keel of the Krasnodar diesel electric sub.

"These submarines will be tested by the Baltic and North Fleets. The first sub of Project 636.3 will be delivered to the Black Sea Fleet in 2015," he said.

The Novorossiysk naval base, where the construction of a protected waterfront is nearing completion, will accommodate the subs, the commander said.

New engineering solutions were used in the construction of a series of six diesel-electric submarines consistent with the requirements set by the Navy command, he noted.

"These solutions improved the parameters of stealth and low nose and the capacities of seaborne armaments, acoustic and life sustenance systems," Chirkov said.

In the end, the Black Sea Fleet will be provided with submarines with some of the world's best low-noise and armament characteristics, he said.

"They will be naturally integrated into the fleet combat control system and missions the Black Sea Fleet forces are tasked with in their zone of operation," Chirkov said.
