Military police stationed in southern Russia armed with non-lethal weapons

MOSCOW. Feb 21 (Interfax-AVN) - Over 1,000 military police officers have been stationed in garrisons and secure facilities of the Southern Military District, the Russian Defense Ministry reports.

"Military police units were provided with over 500 non-lethal weapons (self-defense tubeless guns), ammunition and special means," says a report of the district press service obtained by Interfax-AVN on Thursday.

Military police officers have the right to use physical force, armaments and specialized means in the line of duty, the district staff said.

Alongside the fulfillment of police duties, the detection and prevention of violations of military discipline, the military police units jointly with other law enforcement authorities and departments have held a number of successful operations in garrisons in the Rostov region, Chechnya and Dagestan.
