Two injured while trying to protect Lenin monument in Odesa region

ODESA. Feb 24 (Interfax) - Two men from the town of Ilyichevsk in the Odesa region have been injured with a stun gun during a conflict near a Lenin monument in the town center, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Interior Ministry Main Directorate for the Odesa region said on Monday.

Both men arrived to protect the monument from possible removal.

Police have already identified the shooter and police detective are investigating the incident.

A criminal case has been opened under part four of Article 296 (hooliganism) of the Ukrainian Criminal Code.

Five Lenin monuments were damaged across the Odesa region over the past weekend. One monument in Odesa's Leninskiy Komsomol Park was pelted with red paint, while another had its head chopped off. Lenin busts were stolen from the monuments in Liubashivka and Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, and a Lenin monument in Savran has been smashed.
