Kharkiv mayor is ready to demolish Lenin monument if Ukraine's parliament decides to dismantle all such monuments

KHARKIV. Feb 24 (Interfax) - Gennady Kernes, the mayor of Kharkiv, believes a decision on dismantling the monument to Lenin in the city's Freedom Square should be made in accordance with the law.

"If the parliament passes a law to dismantle all monuments to Lenin (I have read in the mass media that some people want that to happen), it means we will make decisions and cite this law in accordance with the current legislation. But now [that there is no law to this effect] I will not take part in that," Kernes told a briefing at the Kharkiv international airport on Sunday.

According to earlier reports, Euromaidan activists voted for the monument to be dismantled on Saturday.

Kernes called the recent developments in Ukraine a revolution and called for the stabilization of the situation.

"A revolution has occurred. The revolutionaries and Maidan have won. For this reason, I suggest that all levels of the administration now work in the interests of the people of our country, not in the interests of political forces. As to the territorial integrity of Ukraine, it is now a task for all levels of the administration, not only the new administration," he said.
