Military prosecutors to investigate Jan 11 shootout on Tajik-Kyrgyz border - Bishkek official

BISHKEK. Feb 25 (Interfax) - Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have formed a joint group to investigate an armed incident that occurred between border guards on the two countries' border in January, a Kyrgyz Prosecutor General's Office spokesman told Interfax on Tuesday.

The investigative group was established at Bishkek's initiative in accordance with the convention on legal assistance and legal relations in civil, family and criminal cases. It includes employees of the Military Prosecutor Offices and law enforcement agencies of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The chief military prosecutors of the two countries will coordinate and oversee the group's work.

A shootout broke out between Kyrgyz and Tajik border guards on January 11 in the vicinity of the Kyrgyz village of Ak-Sai and the Tajik exclave of Vorukh. Two servicemen of Tajikistan and five of Kyrgyzstan were injured.

The incident resulted from Kyrgyzstan's construction of a road bypassing the Tajik exclave. Tajikistan claims the road goes across its territory
