Ukraine stabilization only possible with strong EU-Russia ties - Luxembourg

MOSCOW. Feb 25 (Interfax) - Normalization is only possible in Ukraine if intensive cooperation ties are maintained between Russia and the European Union, said Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn.

Asselborn said at a press conference after talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that it is his and the European Union's conviction that stability and stabilization are only possible in Ukraine if strong cooperation ties are maintained between the EU and Russia.

He said that if the European Union can set an example for Ukraine, there must nonetheless be no two-headed approach, where Ukraine would be divided into two parts with one part advocating cooperation with the West and the other cooperation with the East.

There are two strategic partners - Russia and the European Union, and they must cooperate for the sake of stabilization in Ukraine, Asselborn said.

It is important for the stabilization process to involve all of Ukraine's regions, communities and ethnic minorities, he said.

The agreement on ways to settle the crisis in Ukraine, signed on February 21, could not have been implemented due to earlier events, he said.
