Crimea parliament calls referendum in seeking more autonomy for region

SYMFEROPIL, Ukraine. Feb 27 (Interfax) - Crimea's parliament on Thursday scheduled a local referendum for May 25 on a proposal for extending the region's autonomy, said the head of the legislature's information and analysis department.

The planned referendum is based on a resolution that received votes of 61 of the 64 deputies who were present at the parliament session where the document was put to vote, Olga Sulnikova told Interfax.

At the plebiscite, voters will be asked to support or reject the following proposition: "The Autonomous Republic of Crimea shall possess state autonomy and shall be a constituent part of Ukraine on the basis of treaties and agreement."

Crimea's parliament would undertake the financial and logistic aspects of the referendum. The legislature's presidium is instructed to organize the referendum.
