Defense Ministry to provide safety for Sochi Paralympics

MOSCOW. March 4 (Interfax) - Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has demanded military leaders provide safety at the upcoming Paralympic Games in Sochi.

"The Winter Olympics in Sochi passed the baton to the Paralympics due to be held on March 7 - 16. I demand military leaders take whatever measures necessary to ensure safety at the forthcoming competitions," the minister said at a telephone conference at the Russian Defense Ministry's situation center on Tuesday.

Army athletes have made the biggest contribution to the Russia team's medal count at the latest Olympics, he recalled. Their efforts won 19 medals, nine of them gold, four silver and six bronze.

"I want to congratulate everyone without exception, including our colleagues who continue combat duty to provide security for the Olympics, on the successful completion of the Olympic Games. I hope they will perform the tasks set before them with honor and return to their bases upon completion of the Paralympic Games," Shoigu said.
