Federation Council speaker calls for balanced approach to situation in Ukraine
MOSCOW. March 5 (Interfax) - Russian Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko has called on her colleagues to cool down on the situation in Ukraine and adopt a balanced and well considered approach to the settlement of the situation in that country.
Opening the Federation Council session, which began with a discussion of the situation in Ukraine, Matviyenko called on senators "to cool down and adopt a balanced approach to the search for a peaceful, constitutional, and legal solution to the crisis in Ukraine."
Matviyenko reiterated that it is extremely important that politicians at all levels should refrain from making emotional statements that "may fuel tensions."
"In this case, we need to weigh every word and adopt a balanced and well considered approach to the settlement of this situation," she said.
Matviyenko called on her colleagues to calm down, although admitting that it was difficult to hide emotions in such a situation.
"Nevertheless, we are responsible people and politicians are responsible for everything that is said. We want to call on everyone to adopt a balanced and well considered approach to this and to calmly continue looking for a peaceful solution to this situation," Matviyenko said.
The senators intend to adopt an address to the parliamentarians of all levels of Ukraine's legislative administration. The document will be adopted by the Federation Council on Wednesday.
