Matviyenko calls for intl probe into Kyiv Maidan crimes

MOSCOW. March 7 (Interfax) - Federation Council Chairperson Valentina Matviyenko has called for an international probe into the Kyiv Maidan events.

"Our Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said that we demand an independent investigation of the killings of people on Maidan. And we will stick to this position and ask the international community to set up an independent commission for investigating the killings," Matviyenko told reporters on Friday.

"We cannot understand why the so-called Ukrainian authorities keep silent. Although experts have said why: the more time passes the more difficult it will be to learn who opened fire and why and for what reason [the people] died," she continued.

"Hence, if these authorities are honest, if these authorities are the people's, they should have held an independent inquiry in the first place rather than opened criminal cases and brought a priori accusations against one official or another. It would have been possible to lay claims, open criminal cases and try these people on this basis," Matviyenko said.
