National Guard may appear in Ukraine - acting President Turchynov

KYIV. March 11 (Interfax) - Ukraine's acting president and Verkhovna Rada speaker, Oleksandr Turchynov, has reiterated the need to establish a National Guard in the country to protect its population.

It is necessary to "establish a National Guard within the Internal Troops of Ukraine," he said during a parliamentary session on Tuesday morning.

"Its goal will be to protect the country and its citizens from any criminals, from any external and internal aggression," Turchynov said.

He also proposed "announcing a partial mobilization in the National Guard and the Armed Forces of Ukraine."

At the same time, Turchynov assured Ukrainian citizens that the proposed mobilization would involve primarily volunteers - "people who once served in the army", "not 18-year-old children."
