UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights cancels trip to Crimea
NEW YORK CITY (UN). March 12 (Interfax) - UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ivan Simonovic has cancelled a trip to Crimea for security reasons, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters on Tuesday.
"Regarding travel to Crimea, he will not be traveling to Crimea given the logistical situation, especially given the fact that the airport is closed for flights coming from other regions of Ukraine, " Dujarric said. He added that a trip to Crimea was not on the UN envoy's current agenda.
Simonovic arrived in Ukraine last week. He has visited Kyiv and is now staying in Kharkiv.
"He met with local authorities there to discuss human rights-related measures that can help to de-escalate tensions," the spokesman said. A trip to Lviv was planned for Wednesday.
