Ukraine acting president demands detention of persons behind Donetsk deaths
KYIV. March 14 (Interfax) - Ukraine's acting president and parliament speaker, Oleksandr Turchynov, has ordered the Interior Ministry to immediately detain all those responsible for human deaths and injuries in the eastern city of Donetsk on March 13.
"The entire world has seen footage of this terrible massacre. The utmost cynicism of all this is that the blood of Ukrainian citizens was spilled who attended a rally in support of our country's unity in their own home city," Turchynov was in a statement published on his website.
He told the police chiefs in the Donetsk region to make sure that "such tragedies will never occur again."
"I am issuing an urgent instruction to immediately investigate this situation, detain all those involved in this bloodshed and punish them for the crimes committed by them in accordance with the law," he said.
One person was killed and another 28 were injured as a result of clashes between rival protesters in Donetsk's Lenin Square on Thursday, the healthcare department of the Donetsk district administration said on Friday.
Earlier reports identified the person who died in Donetsk as Dmytro Chernyavsky, 22, an activist and former spokesman of the regional branch of the far-right party Svoboda (Freedom).
Local media companies claim that up to three people were killed and at least 50 were injured during the clashes in Donetsk. However, these reports have not been confirmed officially so far.
