Russia's Sinara expects to supply locomotives, metro cars to Azerbaijan

MOSCOW. March 17 (Interfax) - Russia's Sinara Group expects to ship locomotives and trains, as well as light-rail transport such as metro cars and trams to Azerbaijan.

Russian pipe maker TMK, which along with Sinara is owned by Dmitry Pumpyansky, said the tycoon made such a proposal for cooperation between Sinara, Azerbaijan Railways and the Baku Metro at a meeting with President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on March 13.

"We talked about the possibility of using electric locomotives made by the Ural Locomotives plant, including the Lastochka electric passenger trains, on Azerbaijan's railways. All of these proposals were met with understanding. I think that contracts will be signed and this work will conclude with a real result," Pumpyansky was quoted as saying.

Ural Locomotives is a joint venture between Sinara Group and Germany's Siemens that was set up in 2010 based on the Russian group's Ural Railway Engineering Plant. The venture builds Sinara electric freight locomotives with DC commutator quill drive and Granit mainline freight electric locomotives with AC quill drive. The venture began manufacturing the Lastochka (Desiro Rus) electric passenger trains last May. It plans to produce the first nine five-car trains and certify them in 2014, and deliver 30 Latochka trains to Russian Railways (RZD) in 2015.
