Belarus' United Civic Party leader Lebedko to be tried for picket
MINSK. March 17 (Interfax) - United Civic Party leader Anatoly Lebedko and several more opposition activists will appear in court on Monday over the picket staged in central Minsk.
"Lebedko and several more people detained last Sunday will be brought to Minsk courts today," United Civic Party spokesperson Anna Krasulina told Interfax.
"Following detention, United Civic Party leader Lebedko, Chairman of the Belarusian branch of the Memorial international organization Vladimir Romanovsky and two more activists of the United Civic Party [a total of five people] were placed in a temporary detention facility at Okrestin [Street] yesterday," Krasulina said.
Two United Civic Party activists Anna Kanopatskaya and Olga Mayorova were detained for the picket but released and were summoned to court on March 17, Krasulina said.
Interfax has reported citing United Civic Party, that, around ten picket participants were detained on March 16. The picket was held in the framework of the campaign regarding elections to Councils of Deputies and was accorded, while in reality it was dedicated to political prisoners.
Picket participants were holding portraits of ten opposition activists, who are "on the list of Belarusian political prisoners."
