Ukrainian events lead to high turnout in Belarusian local election - Central Elections Commission

MINSK. March 24 (Interfax) - Belarusian Central Elections Commission Chairperson Lidia Yermoshina has reported a high voter turnout in the local election and said the Ukrainian events are a factor.

"The Ukrainian events were a serious factor. Regular non-politicized residents, average people realized that strong authorities were necessary for the normal existence of the country," the Central Elections Commission chairperson told reporters on Monday.

"And how can one support strong authorities? Only through elections, through one's participation in them," Yermoshina said.

"Minsk made a truly heroic effort: the 61% turnout is a very good indicator, the capital city demonstrates approximately the same turnout only in presidential elections. And the turnout stood at about 80% in the Gomel and Mogilyov regions," she emphasized.

Some 77.27% of voters elected locals council of deputies in Belarus, Yermoshina said.
