Security forces kill 167 gunmen in Dagestan in 2013 - Dagestani interior minister
MAKHACHKALA. March 27 (Interfax) - Security forces killed 167 gunmen, including 10 gang leaders, in Dagestan in 2013, Dagestani Interior Minister Abdurashid Magomedov said at a session of the Dagestani People's Assembly on Thursday.
Ninety-two policemen were also killed and 176 others injured in attacks. Also 12 civilians were killed and 73 injured, he said.
Another 27 gunmen surrendered, and 213 members of illegal armed groups and their accomplices were detained and convicted, he said.
Thirteen terrorist and sabotage groups are currently acting in Dagestan, Magomedov said.
Nearly 800 firearms were seized in operations to neutralize members of the criminal underworld, he said.
"As many as 763 firearms were seized last year, including 167 assault rifles, 16 machine-guns, and 36 grenade launchers. Also 75 improvised explosive devices ready for action and 2 tonnes of components for them were seized. Two clandestine workshops for manufacturing weapons were eliminated," he said.
