Zyuganov doubts Ukraine can have fair election under present circumstances

MOSCOW. April 1 (Interfax) - It is impossible to hold transparent and fair presidential election in Ukraine under the current circumstances, Russian Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov opined.

"It is impossible to hold fair and decent elections in Ukraine under such circumstances. Whenever an election commission is subordinated to people with rifles in their hands, it will record any result it is ordered to record," he told a press conference at the Interfax central office on Tuesday.

In the words of Zyuganov, the Ukrainian situation is worsening. "Mass demonstrations were held" in a number of southeastern Ukrainian regions last weekend to demand a special status of the Russian language and integration with the Russian industrial complex, he said.

"Citizens demand the establishment of a southeastern republic within Ukraine, the recognition of Russian as the state language and the possibility of preserving their contacts with Russian industrial enterprises," Zyuganov said.
