International naval exercise ends in South China Sea
VLADIVOSTOK. April 5 (Interfax-AVN) - The ships of the Pacific Ocean Fleet (POF), which took part in the Komodo-2014 international naval exercise in South China Sea, will continue military service in the Pacific Ocean, POF spokesman 1st Captain Roman Martov told Interfax-AVN on Friday.
"The closing ceremony of the Komodo-2014 exercise was held on the Indonesian island of Natuna on April 3. After completing the exercise the squadron of POF ships consisting of the anti-submarine warfare ship "Marshal Shaposhnikov," tanker "Irkut" and the rescue boat "Alatau" led by the Primorsky mixed-forces unit's deputy commander, Rear Admiral Vladimir Dmitriyev, continued military service in the Pacific Ocean," Martov said.
At the final phase of the exercise, Russian army medics based at a field hospital deployed on the island of Sobangmovan, were actively involved in all episodes of training for the medics from multi-national forces, and conducted a surgery, the spokesman said.
In the surgical unit, the Russian naval medics, along with Indonesian marine corps medics, jointly conducted a surgery needed for an island resident, the officer said.
Elsewhere on the Komodo training site, rescue marines provided help to the island's population in a natural disaster cleanup operation.
