Berkut commander put under house arrest, his two subordinates arrested for two months - newspaper
KYIV. April 7 (Interfax) - The Kyiv Pechersky District Court has put the commander of the former special task force Berkut, who is suspected of organizing the killing of protesters in central Kyiv in February 2014, the newspaper Segodnya reported on Monday.
His two subordinates have been sentenced to two months, the paper reported.
The colleagues of the Berkut commander said the major is not wearing an electronic bracelet, but "has to be at home at a certain time and is required to come to the Prosecutor General's Office when called by the investigator," the paper reported.
The defense lawyers plan to file an appeal.
According to Segodnya, the men are suspected of a crime enshrined by Article 115 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code (the killing of two or more people). The company commander is suspected of organizing the mass killings and his subordinates are suspected of assisting it," Segodnya reported.
Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said 13 of the 19 former Berkut special task officers are suspected of involvement in the killing of protesters on Kyiv's Maidan.
