Afghan presidential election will unite nation - ministry

MOSCOW. April 7 (Interfax) - Moscow hopes that the Afghan presidential election will help stabilize the country, and reaffirmed its line towards continuing cooperation with the new Afghan authorities.

The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan held its presidential and local council elections on April 5.

"Russia watched the election process closely. A delegation of Russian observers was sent to Kabul on the eve of the vote. We are expecting an announcement of the official results of the vote and reaffirm our willingness to continue cooperation with the Afghan authorities across the broad range of issues of mutual interest, primarily, the fight against terrorism and drug crime," the Russian Foreign Ministry's Department of Information and Press said in a commentary issued on Monday.

"We hope that the elections will contribute to swift stabilization of Afghanistan, consolidation of the country's democratic course and further national unification," the ministry said.
