Police deployed in Kharkiv to prevent clashes

KHARKIV. April 7 (Interfax) - Residents supporting Ukraine's unity and integration with Europe are gathering in Kharkiv's Liberty Square again.

Several hundred demonstrators carrying Ukrainian flags have filled the square. They are singing the Ukrainian national anthem and chanting slogans in support of Ukraine's unity.

Meanwhile, pro-Russian activists who want a referendum to be held on Ukraine's federalization, remain near the entrance of the regional administration headquarters. They are holding Russian flags, flags of the Southeast movement imitating Russian victory ribbons, as well as St. Andrew's flags of the Russian navy, and are chanting, "Russia!" "Referendum!"

The sides are divided by a double police cordon. An additional line of policemen blocks the demonstrators' way to pro-Ukrainian activists.

A fight erupted earlier on Monday between pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian activists, in which ten people were injured. A 77-year-old man felt unwell and he died as he was being rushed to a hospital.
