Syrian chemical weapons to be destroyed in time - OPCW technical secretariat director general
MOSCOW. April 14 (Interfax) - Completely destroying the Syrian chemical weapons within the timeline set by international community, namely mid 2014, is a real possibility, Organization for the Prohibition of the Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Technical Secretariat Director General Ahmet Uzumcu said.
"We are trying to finish [this task] by the 2014 deadline," Uzumcu said when speaking at the Moscow State University of Foreign Affairs (MGIMO) for participants of the Model UN forum on Monday.
The step will contribute to the Syrian settlement in general, Uzumcu said.
Six countries, including Israel, which have not joined the chemical weapons convention yet, should do this immediately, Uzumcu said.
"I am urging the six states to join the convention without any preliminary conditions. I have recently sent letters to the foreign ministers of these countries, so that they might consider this issue immediately," Uzumcu said.
Uzumcu will meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov later on Monday.
Uzumcu holds the title of a doctor of honor of MGIMO.
