Batkivschyna didn't discuss issue of referendum yet

KYIV. April 14 (Interfax) - The Batkivschyna faction of the Ukrainian parliament has still not discussed the issue of holding an all-Ukrainian referendum on the issue of the country's state system simultaneously with the May 25 presidential elections.

Responding to a question from journalists as to whether the issue of the referendum has been discussed by the party and the Batkivschyna faction, Serhiy Sobolev, acting head of the faction, said it has not. "No, we haven't discussed it," he said.

Earlier on Monday, Ukraine's acting president and Parliament Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov said an all-Ukrainian referendum could be conducted simultaneously with the presidential elections scheduled for May 25.

"I am confident that the majority of Ukrainians in this referendum, which may be held simultaneously with the presidential elections if the parliament makes an appropriate decision, will support an indivisible, independent, democratic, and unitary Ukraine," Turchynov said.

Speaking about Turchynov's statement on this issue, Sobolev said: "He didn't expressly say anything about an all-Ukrainian referendum. He said that because people are now demanding a referendum he is considering the possibility of seeing how it will fit with the law on referendums."
