Ukraine lawmaker wants police to be allowed to use arms against protesters
KYIV. April 14 (Interfax) - The acting parliamentary leader of the Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) party on Monday insisted on allowing police to use weapons against protesters in eastern regions of Ukraine who have been occupying government buildings.
"We should immediately go back to the resolution of February 20, 2014, which limits the powers of [police] concerning the use of special measures, including weapons, against those who are using weapons to seize buildings," Serhiy Sobolev told a meeting. "We passed that resolution after [Viktor] Yanukovych and [Vitaly] Zakharchenko gave illegal orders to fire on civilians."
Sobolev claimed that the resolution prevented police from taking measures that are allowed by law by the police force.
"Our resolution reflected another set of circumstances, when there was no threat from outside, and exactly for this reason we should bring that part of the resolution into line with the status quo," he said.
