Kazakh authorities to continue buying out arms from citizens
ALMATY. April 16 (Interfax) - The Kazakh Interior Ministry has decided to hold another campaign to buy out illegal arms from citizens.
It will be possible to hand in ammunition, weapons and explosive substances from April 21, the Almaty police press office said in a statement on Wednesday.
To do this, a citizen is to address any city or district interior affairs agency with a statement stipulating personal information, weapons type, model, caliber and number, the amount of ammunition and their source.
Before that such a campaign was held last fall. As a result, 6,500 citizens reached out to the law enforcement authorities between September 1 and November 30 and voluntarily surrendered 470 pieces of firearms, almost 800,000 pieces of ammunition for rifles, 50 explosive devices (grenades, mines, and shells) and 76 kg of explosive substances.
The law, stipulating campaigns to buy out illegal firearms from citizens, ammunition and explosive devices in case of voluntarily surrender, came into effect in Kazakhstan in January 2008.
