Uzbek parliament, premier given broader powers

TASHKENT. April 17 (Interfax) - The Uzbek Constitution has been changed and amended to broaden the parliament's powers and increase the government's responsibility.

The law titled "On changes and amendments to certain articles of the Republic of Uzbekistan Constitution (Articles 32, 78, 93, 98, 103 and 117)" signed a day earlier by President Islam Karimov, was published in the official press and came into effect on Thursday.

The president-proposed bill was passed by the Legislative (lower) house on March 27, 2014, and approved by Senate on April 10.

"The present changes and amendments to the Republic of Uzbekistan Constitution are aimed at further democratization of the system of power and government," according to the preamble of the new law.
