First Russian insurance company to start operating in Crimea soon

SIMFEROPOL. April 18 (Interfax) - The first Russian insurance company in Crimea will begin operating no later than April 23, the republic's acting head, Sergei Aksyonov, said at a press conference in Simferopol on Friday.

"I think one of the insurance companies will make its way [to Crimea] soon since we had talks yesterday. For now, I'm not going to name this group of companies, but I think we will have an insurer by Wednesday," he said.

Russian insurance companies have expressed interest in working in Ukraine, but are acting cautiously, Aksyonov said. "Many [insurance companies] have branches in the West in European countries among others, [and] everyone is afraid of sanctions. Each of them is scared that operations in Crimea will bring about some responsive measures from western authorities, and people might lose capitalization of its companies that are located outside of the Russian Federation," he said.
