Russian Foreign Ministry concerned about kidnappings of foreign diplomats in Libya
MOSCOW. April 18 (Interfax) - Moscow is urging Tripoli to immediately assist in securing the release of foreign diplomats abducted in Libya, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.
"Moscow is urging the Libyan authorities to do everything possible to locate and release abducted foreign diplomats as quickly as possible, punish the individuals responsible for these crimes and enhance their efforts to protect diplomatic missions and the offices of international organizations accredited in Libya," the document said.
It has been reported that the Jordanian ambassador in Tripoli was kidnapped on April 15 and an advisor of the Tunisian diplomatic mission was kidnapped on April 17.
"The situation in the security sector of Libya is not getting better," the statement said. "Continuing activities of criminal elements show that serious disadvantages in the work of national law enforcement authorities remain," it said.
South Korea's commercial attache and five employees of the Egyptian Embassy in Libya were abducted in early 2014 and then later released, the Russian Foreign Ministry said. The fate of the Tunisian Embassy employee in Tripoli, who went missing on March 21, is still unknown, the statement said.
