Putin sends condolences to S. Korean president over deadly ferry accident
MOSCOW. April 18 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended his condolences to the South Korean President over the sinking of the Sewol ferry, which claimed multiple lives, the Kremlin press office said on Friday.
"The Russian president has sent a telegram of condolences to President of the Republic of Korea Park Geun-hye over the multiple victims, including many children, as a result of the sinking of the Sewol passenger ferry. Putin expressed his condolences to the families of those killed and the Korean people and wished swift recovery to those injured," the Kremlin press office said.
The Sewol ferry sank off the southwestern coast of South Korea on April 16. According to the latest reports, the death toll has risen to 25, and 271 passengers are unaccounted for. One hundred seventy-nine people have been rescued.
There were 477 people on board when the disaster struck. The majority of the passengers were schoolchildren heading to a coastal resort town.
