Putin wants center formed in charge of Arctic policy

MOSCOW. April 22 (Interfax) - President Vladimir Putin said a single center should be set up in Russia in charge of implementing national policy in the Arctic zone.

"We see attention in the Arctic region growing globally. The interests of the Arctic states and other centers of force collide more and more frequently in this region," Putin told the Russian Security Council on Tuesday.

Putin also said that the current situation in the world is breeding new risks and challenges to Russia's national interests, including in the Arctic.

"In this setting, it is our duty to take additional measures and keep pace with our partners, maintain our influence in the region and outdistance our competitors. First, we must enhance the quality of state governance and decision-making mechanisms. With this end in view we must set up a single center in charge of implementing the Arctic policy," Putin said.
