Lavrov: Moscow to support Lebanese law enforcers fighting extremists
MOSCOW. April 24 (Interfax) - Russia pledges support to Lebanese law enforcement authorities fighting extremism and hopes that the presidential election in Lebanon will promote public consolidation and normalize the activity of state bodies, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
"We will support the Lebanese army and law enforcement authorities, which have taken important efforts towards the restoration of order in Tripoli and the deterrence of Jihadists in the Beqaa Valley," Lavrov told a press conference following negotiations with his Lebanese counterpart Gibran Bassil.
"Before the Lebanese parliament started to elect the new president, we expressed the hope that the ballot [the first round of which has been held] would be successful and provide the efficient operation of all state power bodies and Lebanese public consolidation," the Russian minister added.
