37 killed, nearly 200 injured in Odessa on May 2 - police
KYIV. May 3 (Interfax) - Thirty-seven people have been killed and about 200 injured, including 22 policemen, as a result of the May 2 events in Odessa, the Odessa regional police said.
"I express my sincere condolences to the families of those killed and injured during the events in the city of Odessa, which resulted in 37 people killed and about 200 injured, including 22 policemen," the regional police chief Petro Lutsyuk said in a statement posted on the regional police department's website on Saturday morning.
Police have launched ten criminal inquiries into the May 2 events under Article 294 (mass disturbances), Article 115 (premeditated murder), Article 345 (threat or violence against a law enforcement officer), Article 296 (hooliganism), Article 341 (takeover of governmental or public buildings or structures), Article 194 (deliberate destruction of, or damage to property), Lutsyuk said.
Police have arrested over 130 people who were actively involved in the mass disturbances, he said.
"I urge citizens not to yield to provocations and not to take part in dubious demonstrations. Law enforcement authorities will do everything to prevent such tragedies in the future and preserve peace and quiet on our land. I can reassure you that police will do all they can to bring those responsible to justice," the regional police chief said.
