Iran wants associated member status of CIS rail council
MOSCOW. May 7 (Interfax) - Iran has requested that its railway administration be included in the CIS Rail Transport Council as an associated member, OJSC Russian Railways (RZD) , whose president, Vladimir Yakunin, leads the organization, reported.
Iranian Deputy Roads and Urban Development Minister and President of Iranian Railways Pour Seyyed filed the petition during a Council session in Astana.
The heads of the CIS rail administrations signed a protocol of the session on Wednesday.
The CIS Rail Transport Council was established in 1992 as a coordinating body of the railway administrations of the CIS. "The agreement on establishing the Council outlined the objective necessity for stable economic relations between the countries arising from the former Soviet Union. The challenge was to retain the developed technology of smooth transportation of passengers and freight, and also play a key role in developing integrated relations within the CIS," the Council says on its website. The Council is made up of rail transport administration and management body chiefs.
