Donetsk city council deputies demand halt of military operation in eastern regions of Ukraine
DONETSK. May 7 (Interfax) - Donetsk city council deputies at an emergency session on Wednesday adopted an address to the Kyiv administration demanding an immediate halt of the military operation in the eastern regions of Ukraine, Donetsk Mayor Oleksandr Lukyanchenko said.
Lukyanchenko quoted to the journalists the text of the address, which states that the military operation has lasted 25 days and has led to civilian casualties. "People are dying. Deputies demand a halt of the operation and the fulfillment of the agreement signed in Geneva," the mayor said.
Representatives of the Donetsk city council believe the halt of the operation should be followed by negotiations between all parties on the fulfillment of the agreements signed in Geneva on April 17.
"The central government doesn't hear Donbass. Verkhovna Rada deputies who should become a link in the talks between Kyiv and Donbass work for one or two days a week tackling mainly their interparty issues while the developments and conflict are running further into a blind alley. And most importantly - people are dying. In this context the violation of democratic norms in parliament guaranteeing the rights of the opposition arouses indignation," the message says.
"In this connection city council deputies demand that Verkhovna Rada consider an immediate halt to the counter-terrorist operation in the towns of Slovyansk, Kramatorsk, Konstantinovka, throughout the territory of Donetsk region and immediate talks with all conflicting sides," deputies stress.
The press service of the city council says that council members unanimously supported the message which was sent to the Donetsk regional council. Besides, head of the Donetsk chapter of the Party of Regions and parliament member Mykola Levchenko will read out the resolution at the closest session of Verkhovna Rada.
