Ukraine's chief prosecutor suing Luhansk legislature

KYIV. May 8 (Interfax) - Ukraine's Office of the Prosecutor General has brought a suit against the presidium of the Luhansk regional council for a statement that attacked the central government, called for boycotting the May 25 presidential election, and expressed support for the planned May 11 referendum in the Luhansk region on the latter's status.

The Office of the Prosecutor General's press service said the office was seeking a ban on the planned referendum and on potential activities to block presidential election voting in the region.

The office argued that the council's appeal to boycott the poll represented interference in the election process, which is prohibited by the law "On Elections for the Office of President of Ukraine," and an attempt to prevent the local population from exercising its constitutional right to vote.

The suit was submitted to the Kyiv District Administrative Court.
