Tallinn mayor finds Crimean referendum "quite legitimate"

TALLINN. May 14 (Interfax) - Edgar Savisaar, mayor of Tallinn and chairman of Estonia's largest opposition party Centre, believes the referendum held in Crimea was "quite legitimate" and that the processes that occurred on the peninsula are "irreversible."

Savisaar said on Estonian radio on Wednesday that he is not confident that Ukraine can do anything with Crimea. "In Crimea, Ukraine demonstrated its inability to resolve crises and debatable issues," he said.

"The referendum in Crimea was legitimate enough to believe in it. You have to be brave and take these things seriously," he said.

Savisaar believes that "the fighting in which people are being killed needs to stop" in southeastern Ukraine. "The case needs to be returned to diplomats, that will give hope that the situation will calm down," he said.
