"Resistance Movement" in Ukraine has over 20,000 members - Tymoshenko

KYIV. May 16 (Interfax) - Yulia Tymoshenko, presidential candidate and leader of the party Batkivschyna, said over 20,000 volunteers have been mobilized to the Resistance Movement.

"Over 20,000 people have voluntarily made a decision to defend Ukraine, and there are people of various ages there," Tymoshenko said at the Agrarian Forum held in the village of Mykhailiki, Poltava region, on Friday, according to a report posted on her official website.

Tymoshenko said both men and women of different ages want to defend the country.

Tymoshenko said she believes the new president of Ukraine should focus on creating an efficient and modern army.

"A war has de facto been declared on us, which is taking over our land. For this reason, the first priority the next president should have is to create a powerful, modern, and well-equipped army, which will never allow to us destroy peace," she said.

"Our army has been broken and destroyed for 23 years, and the result is that only volunteers are now capable of defending the country strongly, patriotically, and bravely. For this reason, I give special thanks to those who have now reached agreements with their families and become volunteers to defend their native country, those who have created voluntary militia units and territorial defense brigades," Tymoshenko said.
