People evacuated from outskirts of Vladikavkaz due to risk of flooding
VLADIKAVKAZ. May 17 (Interfax) - Residents of villages in North Ossetia on the border with Georgia and the outskirts of the capital Vladikavkaz, are evacuated due to a risk of flooding; residents of the village of Lars have told Interfax.
"The situation is not clear. We have been asked to leave our homes. We were told that there is a danger of the Terek spilling over," a female villager said.
Top spokesperson for the North Ossetian Interior Ministry Alla Akhpolova told Interfax that Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Zanginov signed orders proclaiming a state of emergency in Vladikavkaz due to the threat of flooding.
There has been a mudflow in Georgia which blocked the river and water levels in the Terek rose by dozens of meters.
"The situation is under control. The population from the outskirts of Vladikavkaz is evacuated. The leadership of the Interior Ministry together with special forces has left for the scene to guarantee order in the territory. The Interior Ministry also strongly recommends the residents of Vladikavkaz not to approach the river banks even in the city," Akhpolova said.
