Georgia's claims about possible hosting of Western missiles alarming - ministry

MOSCOW. May 22 (Interfax) - A statement made by Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Alasania who said that Georgia could host missile defense systems of the United States or NATO is alarming, a Russian Foreign Ministry representative said.

"We were very alarmed by the remarks made by Georgian Defense Minister Alasania in Washington, calling for U.S. or NATO missile defense systems to be deployed in Georgia," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Aleksandr Lukashevich said at a briefing in Moscow on Thursday.

"A defense minister is supposed to look after the security of his country, while taking into consideration at least the security concerns of the neighboring states as well. That is an inevitable formula," he said.

"With regard to Tbilisi's real intentions, we inevitably have questions as to what is being meant and against whom these systems are supposed to defend," Lukashevich said.
