Donetsk People's Republic declares martial law
DONETSK. May 26 (Interfax) - Martial law has been declared in the Donetsk region, the press service of the unrecognized Donetsk People's Republic told Interfax.
"Martial law was put into place in the Donetsk People's Republic at 12:00 a.m. on May 26. The main task is to clear the Donetsk People's Republic's territory from the hostile Ukrainian forces," the press service said.
Ukrainian First Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Yarema said several hours ago that the army operation in eastern Ukraine would resume shortly.
"The Ukrainian army and law enforcers suspended their operation today [on Sunday] for the sake of a peaceful resolution of the election issue, so that people in eastern regions could come to polling stations and cast their ballots. Yet the armed forces stayed on high alert, the areas of operation of terrorist organizations were cordoned off, and the active phase of the anti-terrorist operation will continue shortly," he told a press briefing in Kyiv on Sunday night.
