LPR distances itself from Ukrainian presidential elections

LUHANSK. May 26 (Interfax) - The prime minister of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic (LPR), Vasyl Nikitin, has stated that the republic has nothing to do with the Ukrainian presidential elections.

"Definitely, the presidential elections of another country are none of our concern. We do not have to recognize anything. In principle, this is a matter of another country," Nikitin told reporters.

He expressed optimism that "the Luhansk region will carry on at the same pace, upwards, better and better."

"Again, it will defend its republic and by joining our efforts we shall win," Nikitin said.

A day earlier the LPR leaders stated that the elections were not held in the Luhansk region, "and if they were somewhere, it was happening at gunpoint."

An Interfax correspondent reported that the elections were held in eight out of the 26 districts of the Luhansk region.
