Three servicemen, several locals injured in fight in Novoaidar district - Ukrainian Defense Ministry

KYIV. May 26 (Interfax) - Three servicemen of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry territorial defense battalion and several local residents were injured on May 25 as a result of the attack of over 50 armed people at a number of polling stations in the Novoaidar district of the Luhansk region, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry posted a statement on Monday.

"As a result of chaotic shooting opened by militants, several local residents sustained gunshot wounds. Three servicemen of the territorial defense battalion were injured as well," the document said.

Following the fight between Ukrainian servicemen, who came to the site of the attack, and members of the illegal armed formation, 14 attackers were detained and two were killed, the Defense Ministry said.

Authorities are currently working on identifying those detained.

It has been reported that a group of unknown individuals seized ballots from polling stations in the Luhansk region's Novoaidar, Central Election Committee Deputy Head Zhanna Uzenko-Chernaya said at a briefing on May 25.

One person died and one was injured in the shooting in Novoaidar, Ukrainian Deputy Interior Minister Serhiy Yarovoy said later.

According to Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, two members of the illegal armed formation were killed and 14 more were detained during a forceful operation in the Luhansk region. Lots of arms and documents were seized in the framework of the operation, Avakov said.

Ukrainian First Deputy Prime Minister Vitaliy Yarema has confirmed the information on the detention of 14 people.
