Kamchatkan volcano Shiveluch spews ash 10 km high
PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY. May 27 (Interfax) - The erupting Kamchatkan volcano Shiveluch has spewed ash ten kilometers high, the Kamchatkan branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Geophysical Service said on Tuesday.
"The volcanic event occurred on Tuesday morning, local time. We could judge the ash emission height by the visual," the report says.
Meanwhile, the Kamchatkan emergency situations department reported that the ash cloud from Shiveluch had been moving southeast towards the Kamchatka Gulf.
"There are no populated localities on the way of the ash cloud. No ashfall has been reported from Kamchatkan towns," a department spokesman told Interfax.
A red alert has been issued for Shiveluch.
Shiveluch is the northernmost active volcano of Kamchatka situated 45 kilometers away from the town of Klyuchi in the Ust-Kamchatsky district with a population of approximately 5,000. It is also one of the largest Kamchatkan volcanoes. Shiveluch became active in May 2009 and now has a fissure that is almost 30 meters deep in its dome.
