Tskhinvali invites intl observers to parliamentary election

TSKHINVALI. May 27 (Interfax) - The South Ossetian Central Elections Commission has invited international observers from Russia, Abkhazia and Transdniestria to monitor the republic's parliament election.

"Confirmations have been received from the State Duma of the Russian Federation and Abkhazia. In addition to the Central Elections Commission, the invitations are sent by the president, the government and the parliament. In all, more than 40 [observers] have been invited. All of them will apply for accreditation by the South Ossetian Central Elections Commission," Commission Chairperson Bella Pliyeva told Interfax on Tuesday.

She said the Commission carried on preparations for the June 8 election of the sixth parliament.

"We are verifying the readiness of polling stations for the vote; repairs are underway at some of them. We are also updating voter lists. The lists will be posted at every polling station," she continued.

Ballot papers have been printed. "In all, we have printed 42,156 ballot papers. We based our calculations on the number of voters registered in the 2012 presidential election. Unused ballot papers will be invalidated after the election," she said.

The South Ossetian parliament election will take place on June 8, 2014. Once again the parliament will be elected by the proportionate system. A victorious party will need to pass the 7% threshold. Nine political parties will compete for parliament seats.
